Social Media Specialist Job Description (Temporary/Full Time) with the North Carolina Association of Educators
The Position
The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) seeks a talented, dedicated, and experienced digital communicator that can organize the online community of educators and community stakeholders. The Social Media Specialist will work under the Communications Director to devise and implement a proactive strategy across social media and other digital platforms.
This is a bargaining unit position.
About North Carolina Association of Educators
The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is building a movement to defend and transform public education in our state to ensure all students and families have access to quality public education that ensures they have the opportunity to meet their full potential. In the last three years we have led the largest educator walkouts in state history and mobilized thousands of voters across the state to the polls as part of our successful campaign to halt the privatizer-controlled General Assembly’s eight-year legislative assault on our educators, students, and communities.
Responsibilities Include
- Represent NCAE’s brand on social media platforms. Provide a new online identity that represents the NCAE of today: creative, innovative, and diverse.
- Organize NCAE members and other digital storytellers to amplify their voices, inspire them to take action, and create momentum for NCAE campaigns.
- Work with the Communications Team to develop and implement a strategic social media plan and calendar.
- Create a social media influencer program to identify and engage unique voices throughout North Carolina.
- Write messaging and content for social media.
- Work with the Communications Team to create a TikTok channel and reinvigorate our Instagram.
- Work with the Communications Team to design creative online content.
- Set social media goals for reach and engagement and track social media data analytics to evaluate and adapt our programs.
- Assist NCAE staff and local affiliates with social media best practices.
- Monitor media coverage and provide updates to NCAE staff and leadership on how the organization is presented in the news.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- At least 1-2 years of experience in digital communications with experience managing a variety of social media platforms, with a base understanding of best practices. Experience managing an organizational or business brand across social media platforms preferred.
- Is creative and excited about designing unique and innovative programs.
- A keen eye for “what’s moving” unique audiences across different social channels.
- A commitment to uplifting and amplifying member-led organizing work.
- A commitment to curiosity, learning, professional growth, and data-based decision-making.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- A demonstrated ability to develop content and messaging for different audiences, social groups and organizing targets.
- A deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in the work and demonstrable experience centering the voice and experiences of marginalized communities.
- Strong interpersonal skills: a deep understanding of trust-building, maintaining strong relationships, and communicating with people across differences.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and project manage, prioritize, and execute to meet frequent and tight deadlines with keen attention to detail.
- Is invested in the political project of rebuilding our union and restoring the promise of public education and our democracy.
- A track record as an excellent collaborator and team player.
- A willingness to work nights and weekends when needed.

Location: Position is based at NCAE headquarters in Raleigh. May require infrequent travel around the state.
Compensation: This is a temporary Professional Staff Step 0 position of the NCAE/NCSO staff union contract with an annual salary of $61,681.00 plus benefits.
