Taylor Hargrave is in her third year as an instructional assistant at George L. Carrington Middle School in Durham. Before becoming an instructional assistant Hargrave was a substitute teacher. She has ambitions of becoming a full-time certified teacher through Durham Public Schools’ TA to Teacher Program.

What do you most enjoy or appreciate about working with students?

I enjoy building relationships and figuring out their kicks. I can help them understand themselves while helping them learn about life and how to manage their emotions. I like being supportive of whatever the kid needs in the moment and giving them a safe space.

Why is it important to you to be an NCAE member?

I know that every person counts, whether they are on the front line or the back end. The bigger the numbers we can move, the more we can make things happen. Anything for the betterment of public education. If it's right, I'm rooting for it.

If you could change one thing about your job or about public education, what would it be?

To pay educators more.

My goal is to go back to school, join the TA-to-teacher program with Durham Public Schools, become a teacher, and then be an administrator.
