Last week the Guilford County Association Educators (GCAE) held a rally on election night to call out the General Assembly’s underfunding of the state’s education system. Members also spoke out against laws passed that could lead to more money being funneled into charter and private schools.
GCAE has petitioned the Guilford County Schools BOE to pass a two-part resolution – they want language calling the situation an emergency created by the General Assembly through lack of funding and harmful legislation, and they asked the BOE to request county commissioners to commit to not providing any capital funds to charter schools.
Edwena Miles, the GCAE vice president said to the crowd of almost 100, “Our local government has scraped together millions of dollars to supplement the state’s abysmal pay to workers to try and stop the bleeding as our teachers, bus drivers, custodians, and other school workers leave this profession for better pay and better working conditions elsewhere. As our students and staff can tell you, these improvements to pay and work conditions are appreciated. But they are also not enough!"
