ESP Spotlight: Mary Arrington and Shon Boone

This month's ESP Spotlight is on Mary Arrington and Shon Boone of Nash County Schools.
Published: December 3, 2024

Mary Arrington and Shon Boone have had a huge impact on NCAE. Over the last year, together they have recruited over 20 new members to our union.

Mary Arrington has worked for Nash County Public Schools for 16 years. She has worn many hats in her time with Nash County Schools such as bus driver, bus monitor, instructional assistant and special driver for OCS.  Shon Boone has worked for Nash County Schools for almost 15 years as a bus driver and a substitute teacher.

What do you most enjoy or appreciate about working with students?

Mary: I enjoy spending time with the students and trying to teach them as much as I can.

Shon: I work with EC students. I enjoy watching them develop and overcome their challenges.

Why is it important to you to be an NCAE member?

Mary: It’s very important to be an NCAE member because we work with NCAE in order to get anything done that we need. NCAE stands with us and helps us along the way - not only for legal help. If you are with NCAE you will be treated fairly and respected the way you should be at your job. It is there for you if anything occurs, NCAE will be there.

Shon: It gives me an opportunity to help my fellow co-workers have a voice for themselves.

Why are public schools important?

Shon: Public Schools are important because they help shape and mold children. It doesn't matter about their background - it helps build children for the future without taking into consideration any of their demographics.

Responses may be edited for clarity and length.

The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is our leading voice for educational excellence, for children and their families, and for the public schools they count on. As the public school employees union and the largest association of professional educators in North Carolina, our membership extends to all 100 counties and includes teachers, non-classified school staff, administrators, students, retirees, and community allies. NCAE believes that every child has a right to a high-quality education, an excellent teacher, and a well-funded school.
