Eimy Rivas Plata and Kelly Fox have spent a combined total of 37 years in the classroom. Both teach for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System and were recently recognized as CHCCS CHAMPions (Celebrating Heroes and Magnificent People). The program is a partnership between Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation that recognizes outstanding students, staff and community members for their work and contributions to the district.

An exceptional children’s resource teacher at East Chapel Hill High School, Eimy was nominated by her students. The kicker was her daughter organized the plan. “These kiddos took the time to write a whole paragraph saying nice things about me. And, how cool is knowing your teenage kid is paying attention to you when you think the only thing they look at is Taylor Swift? This further convinced me that even when we see kids on their phones 24-7, they are always watching us, and they know we make an effort and we care.”

Kelly, a sixth-grade social studies teacher and field hockey coach at Phillips Middle School, was tickled about being celebrated.

“I work so hard and having a parent recognize the time and effort I share with my students was an honor in itself. Having the district share this meant the world.”

Both of these veteran educators share a love for students and a passion for the profession. When asked what they enjoy most about teaching, Eimy commented, “The kids. They make all the difference every day. I go to school for them. While I don’t know what the day will bring, I do know our job is important and being there for the students is crucial. Some of the best moments are when we sit together and talk.” As for Kelly, “I love sharing my passion and excitement with my students and colleagues. Teaching history is easy to love!”
