North Carolina Association of Educators Statement on Paid Parental Leave for Public School Professionals

The North Carolina Association of Educators supports policies that help all North Carolinians decide how and when to grow their families. We urge lawmakers to focus on helping create more ways for working families to prosper, rather than limiting peoples’ rights as Senate Bill 20 does.

Raleigh, NC - The North Carolina Association of Educators supports policies that help all North Carolinians decide how and when to grow their families. We urge lawmakers to focus on helping create more ways for working families to prosper, rather than limiting peoples’ rights as Senate Bill 20 does.

NCAE President Tamika Walker Kelly released the following statement on paid parental leave for public school professionals being included in SB 20:

“Paid parental leave for our public school professionals means no longer having to save up years’ worth of sick days or navigate school schedules when deciding to become a parent, giving educators and their families access to the same rights enjoyed by other state employees and private sector workers. NCAE has long advocated for paid parental leave and supported it as a standalone bill, but we are disappointed in the way the policy was shoehorned into the harmful SB 20."

“We support the rights of all North Carolinians to decide how and when to grow their families and policies that make it easier for them to make those decisions. It’s a shame that SB 20 is more focused on limiting our rights than creating more ways for working families to thrive in our state.”
