NCAE Voices Disappointment With Override of Governor’s Veto on SB 382

SB 382 politicizes Hurricane Helene Recovery efforts to strip power away from democratically elected officials, while also pushing stricter voting laws
Published: December 11, 2024

Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) today issued a statement expressing deep dissatisfaction with lawmakers’ decision to override Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 382. The bill, which fails to offer relief to Western North Carolina residents affected by Hurricane Helene, instead shifts power away from the incoming administration.

“This bill is a farce and a last-ditch effort to grab power before the Republican supermajority is broken. It does absolutely nothing to help our schools, educators, children, or the people of Western North Carolina who are still grappling with the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Worse, it undermines the will of North Carolinians, who made their voices heard this past fall by electing new leadership. This legislation reflects neither the needs nor the desires of the people of our state.”

- Tamika Walker Kelly, NCAE President
